If only 10% of the scour critical and scour susceptible bridges (over 36,000 in the US only) and of those having unknown foundations (about the same number) are to be protected –leaving the rest unattended, including those to be constructed–, that amounts to several thousand bridges. This gross estimate shows the potential market of the Pier Sheath only in the U. S. bridge construction and maintenance field, without considering other submerged structures (such as windmill columns at sea, for example).
